The Fairway Galle Literary Festival 2017 opened on the evening of Wednesday, January 11 with invitees and participants being treated to a grand display of Sri Lankan dance and folk culture. The opening at the Galle Fort’s Law Courts Square was followed by the cultural show at the Akersloot Bastion presented by the Tri Forces and the Police, full of sound and drama.
Thursday, January 12, it was time to get down to the serious business of the festival- the literature! The sessions unfolded at the Hall de Galle, the Maritime Museum and Scout Headquarters, as well as at Jetwing’s Galle Heritage Villa and festival-goers enjoyed listening to authors talk of topics as diverse as lions in Africa and the influence of the Roman Empire.
In between, there was music and food stalls aplenty (though pricey) to create the relaxed vibe that the Fairway Galle Literary Festival has come to be known for. Fringe events included a performance by popular female choir Soul Sounds as German graphic novelist Reinhard Kleist drew images alongside and Leo Art, the ad agency’s annual exhibition featuring local artists which will extend the duration of the festival.
