To address the problems of improper disposal of solid waste and lack of adequate waste management in the city of Jaffna and the surrounding suburbs, Jetwing Hotels have stepped in with their “Zero Kuppai” or ‘Zero Waste’ venture to help the community build a Jaffna free of solid waste, including plastic and polythene.
With the assistance of the Mayor of Jaffna, like-minded organisations, and community-based institutions, Jetwing Hotels aim to combat the problem of poor waste management through awareness building, training school children and communities on best practices in solid waste management, and strengthening infrastructure to encourage and streamline proper collection and disposal.
Through Jetwing’s initiative, Coca-Cola Sri Lanka under its “Give Back Life” programme, has provided Jaffna city with 10 PET plastic collection bins to be placed in public spaces such as schools, parks, and railway and bus terminals, and a large-scale PET collection hut at Jaffna’s Gurunagar harbour.
Plastic and polythene waste accumulating in waterways, canals, and street corners is not simply an eyesore to any traveller but also an environmental concern, especially considering the peninsula is home to thousands of migratory birds during the winter months.
Jetwing is also hopeful of securing a grant to provide the project with the necessary financial platform to have a widespread impact and help Jaffna become a clean, green city.
