'Village Experience' thrills Sigiriya tourists
A project launched by local residents targetting tourists in Sigiriya has become an instant hit.
As part of the program, tourists are taken in traditional bullock carts on a 2 kilometer journey through the jungle to the beautiful 'Egoda Wewa,' which offers scenic views of the Sigiriya rock fortress. They are then taken by boat across Egoda Wewa to the Egoda Wewa village, where they are invited to local residences and given an authentic Sri Lankan village lunch.
The program has become highly popular, especially among foreign tourists and it has also become an economic boon for females in historic villages around Sigiriya who are skilled in traditional cooking. Additionally, it has provided many new employment opportunities to area youths, both male and female.
The bullock cart tours are currently being implemented in places such as Habarana and Dambulla.
