The Vintage Car Owners Club held a reliability run over the weekend from Moratuwa to Galle. Stopping off in Hikkaduwa for lunch and meeting up with other members and continuing the journey in fancy dress.
The club was formed in 1987, catering to owners of Veteran, Edwardian, Vintage and Post-Vintage vehicles. These include cars, motorcycles, lorries, buses and even steam driven vehicles. There are nearly 200 members with in excess of 200 vehicles. Cars eligible to the club contain number plates from the A to Z series.
President of the Vintage Car Owners Club Neil Fernando, owner of an Austin 7 and Morris 8 produced in 1937 said, “Some of these cars are approaching 100 years, they are British and German made. We conduct this run to encourage members to maintain the vehicles. It’s not easy to move these cars, as they don’t have hydraulic brakes. Furthermore it’s very difficult to find the skilled people who have the knowledge to fix them. Most parts we can mange locally expect for tires and batteries.”
At the conclusion of the run in Galle Fort chief guest Governor of the Southern Province Dr Hemakumara Nannayakkara will award the participants with certificates of completion.
