Naval personnel in Mandaitivu in the Northern Naval Area arrested fifiteen persons while harvesting sea cucumbers, without authorized licence, in seas off Mandaitivu yesterday.
Along with the suspects 104 sea cucumbers, 7 diving masks, 6 pairs of diving fins and a traditional boat (Wallam) were taken into naval custody. The arrested persons and items were handed over to the Jaffna Fisheries Inspector for onward action.
The United States has told Sri Lanka that the disposition of the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Bushehr and its crew is a matter for Colombo to resolve under its own laws and international obligations, while signalling it is in active talks with Sri Lanka to contain Iran’s threat to US interests.
