2017 to be the 'Year of Alleviating Poverty'
The Government has declared 2017 as the 'Year of Alleviating Poverty.' A proposal made in this regard by President Maithripala Sirisena was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers at yesterday's Ministerial meeting.
The government has paid its attention on alleviating poverty according to the pledge given in the 2015 Presidential Election and according to the UN sustainable development goals. Economic development should also consider social security, minimizing income differences, marginalized communities due to various reasons, development diversities in provincial and district levels, the Government noted.
The proposal also recognized the need of a macro programme and giving priority to a collective approach. The programme will be supervised by a Committee comprised of relevant ministers and partners. It will be headed by the President and the Prime Minister.
