President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has advised the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to introduce a cycle lane between Galle Face and Diyatha Uyanaa in Battaramulla, the Government Information Department said today.
UDA Western Province Director Y.A.G.K. Gunatillake said that the project, to be completed by 2021, will target school children, those using bicycles to get to work, local and foreign tourists as well those involved in cycling as a sport.
The route covers 23 km with a width between 1.5 and 2.5 metres.
The cycling lane commences from the Port City going parallel to Galle Road, turning off towards Bera lake, and then towards Gangaramaya temple and proceeding towards the Vihara Mahadevi Park. From the park the route pases through Nelum Pokuna, Independence square, Bauddaloka Mw, the Golf Course Borella, Kotte to Diyatha Uyana. Another route around the parliament also will link up to Diyatha Uyana.
As the second phase, another cycling lane will be introduced from Meethotumulla to the Floating Market in Pettah passing the supreme courts complex.
