Medical internships were granted for 278 registered medical officers following the Supreme Court's decision to lift the interim order issued on the suspension of such internships.
A dearth of medical officers were experienced in state hospitals in November last year owing to the problems pertaining to SAITM, and affected the running of 24-hour healthcare services, the Health Ministry said in a press release.
Accordingly, the Ministry claimed that it had plans of granting appointments to qualified doctors who had obtained their degrees at both local and foreign universities and also the Sri Lanka Medical College (SLMC) in February this year.
However, these appointments had to be shelved as fundamental rights petition was filed at the Supreme Court following which an interim order on issuing such internships was suspended.
