At least 290 prisoners have been granted amnesty by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today in view of marking the national Vesak festival across 30 prisons in the country, Department of Prisons said.
Prisoners who have served ten years or more of the sentence of imprisonment and over the age of 65 were among those given general amnesty today. Four of them are women.
62 detainees who are released on conditional basis of good conduct while imprisonment will be monitored in near future, an official from the Department said.
