The Meteorology Department issuing an advisory Severe Lightning said that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Uva provinces and Ampara and Nuwara-Eliya Districts.
They warned that temporary localized strong winds could occur during thundershowers. General public are kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning.
The Department of Meteorology advised that people should seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees, avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms, they also warned to avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms.
“Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc. Beware of fallen trees and power lines. For emergency assistance contact the local disaster management authorities”, the department added.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
