An Agrarian Service Officer who obtained a bribe of Rs 30,000 from a farmer organisation in the Nochchiyagama area was sentenced to a ten-year rigorous imprisonment by Colombo High Court Judge Adithya Patabendi.
The officer Anura Hemantha Kumara Ranaweera, had taken the bribe to give his endorsement to cash a cheque which the farmer organization had received.
The officer was ordered to pay a fine of Rs 20,000 and pay back the Rs 30,000 as a penalty .
The bribe had been taken on January 12, 2016.
Assistant Director of the Bribery Commission appearing for the prosecution said that taking of bribes has turned to be an art and it is a dangerous trend to the society and she pleaded that a suitable punishment be given to keep away public sector employees taking bribes.

The Supreme Court today refused interim relief in an application filed by President’s Counsel Senaka Walgampaya seeking an Order from the Supreme Court compelling the President to appoint judges to fill the existing vacancies in the Court Of Appeal.
