A long standing rivalry between two gangs is believed to have triggered off Monday’s shooting which claimed the life of Wasantha Perera alias Club Wasantha and another person in Authurugiriya, Police believe.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Nihal Thalduwa said that it is believed that the attack had been organized overseas, but did not elaborate on the details uncovered so far.
In another breakthrough on Monday night, the second vehicle used by the gunmen to escape the crime scene was found abandoned in the Bulathsinhala area in the Kalutara district.
Within hours of the incident, police traced the car which the gunmen escaped soon after the shooting incident. The vehicle was found abandoned in Koratota, Kaduwela.
Police sources said that they believe, that an incident in 2019 in Dubai had been the main reason for the shooting. Club Wasantha is reported to have tipped off authorities in Dubai about the party organized by drug dealer Kanjipani Imran and Makaundure Madush.
DIG Thalduwa said that the airport has been alerted to prevent the gunmen escaping from the country.
The shooting incident took place during opening of a saloon/tattoo shop in Authurigiriya by Club Wasantha.
Popoular vocalist K.Sujeewa who attended the event was also among the injured along with Club Wasantha’s wife. Four others were injured.
The other person killed was a 38 year old person from Athurugiriya.
A revolver was found in the handbag of Club Wasantha’s wife.
The gunmen had used two T56 weapons .
Meanwhile police strongly believe that a youth standing outside the saloon was keeping the gunmen informed about the movements of Club Wasantha.
Fifty five year old Club Wasantha was known to operate some of the night clubs.
Meanwhile in 2017, at the same location an employee of a saloon was shot dead.
Meanwhile Dr Rukshan Bellana, Deputy Director of the National Hospital said that the condition of vocalist Sujeewa was in a stable condition. She had suffered injuries on her leg.
