Over Rs 15 million worth gold and cash was stolen by armed thieves who broke into the house of a vegetable businessman in Norochcholai this morning, police said.
The businessman and his family were held captive by the armed gang with two pistols and sharp weapons.
Investigations revealed that the businessman was forced to open his safe after being threatened kill his wife and children.
Nearly 70 sovereigns of gold jewelry worth Rs. 12 million and Rs. Three million cash was stolen from the safe.
Police investigations revealed that the armed gang had fled the scene using a byway.
Kalpitiya Police and Norochcholai Police are jointly carrying out further investigations along with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Police Fingerprint Division.
Police teams are in the process of checking all the camera systems in nearby houses and roads.
