Police have taken steps to isolate Bazaar Street in Vavuniya town today (8) after PCR tests revealed that 55 owners and employees of shops in the street have contracted COVID-19.
Vavuniya Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tissa Lal De Silva said 165 owners and employees of shops in the area were subjected to PCR tests on January 6 and the results have shown that 55 of them had contracted COVID-19.
As soon as the PCR test results came back, police, army and Public Health Inspectors (PHI) took immediate steps to close off Bazaar Street and isolate the area.
Health authorities are also appealing to customers who have been to shops in Bazaar Street to be extremely vigilant about their health and to immediately notify the area PHI office or police if they feel unwell.
The Vavuniya PHI office meanwhile, stated that steps have also been taken to identify the close contacts of the 55 COVID-19 patients and subject them to PCR tests as well.
