The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to permit the private sector to import 50,000 metric tons of GR11 rice, a substitute for Keeri Samba.
The proposal was presented by the Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security Nalin Fernando.
The decision was reached by the Government in an effort to establish competitive pricing for Keeri Samba and Samba rice in the local market, aiming at providing consumer relief.
Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the import of 50,000MT of rice, under the Food Policy Committee’s directives, to manage rising local market prices.
