In the face of a shortage of chicken, a request made by the Defence Ministry to import chicken needed for the armed forces has been approved by the President, a senior official at the Ministry of Trade told Times Online.
The Secretary to the Ministry of Defence made the request during a meeting between different agencies regarding the chicken shortage, the official said.
It has also been decided to allow any company involved in the meat processing industry to import raw meat material required for their products if they make any request. However, the President has emphasised that if this is allowed, the companies concerned must sell products made from imported raw meat materials at a cheaper rate to ensure that the benefit goes to the customer, added the official.
However, no company has thus far made a request to import raw meat material, the official further said.
