Secretary of the Defence Ministry, Retired Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha, has issued directives to arrest all armed forces deserters immediately, the Ministry said.
The decision came in the wake of reports that suggested the involvement of deserting military personnel engaging in contract killings and other criminal operations across the country.
Addressing the media last week on the recent surge in criminal activities by criminal gangs across the island, Defence Secretary Thuyacontha said that many of such individuals involved in recent crimes had unofficially left or been discharged from military service shortly after receiving weapons training.
He assured that necessary actions are being taken, with the assistance of the Police, to apprehend these individuals.
Earlier, the Sri Lanka Army instructed all personnel below the rank of Major to surrender their passports to their respective regiments.
