A group of drug smugglers had left haul of Kerala cannabis at roadside in Jaffna yesterday in an attempt to avoid detection by naval officers.
The navy officials said that they detected 18 parcels containing 35 kilograms and 900 grams of cannabis laid at a side of a by road attached to Maamunai main road during evening hours.
They added that group of officials of the Veththilakeni naval camp, commanded under the northern command had carried out a drug detection raid at Maamunai area according to a tipoff.
The officers suspect that the drug smugglers would have ditched cannabis haul and leave the area to avoid detection of the drugs which they were transporting.
The haul of cannabis estimated to be worth over 11 million, is currently held under the custody of the navy until further legal actions are taken,
