All new appointments and transfers of state employees are to be restricted soon  the announcement of election date for the Local Government polls, a senior official of the Election Department said.

The official explained that even though restrictions are there authorities are able to carry out essential transfers after notifying the Election Commission. However when giving such an appointment no extravagant politically themed functions could be held.

The official said that the Commission would provide a set of guidelines to carry out recruitments and transfers depending on the situation.   

Meanwhile Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna (SLPP) made the first deposit for the local government election from the Kalutara district.

The SLPP too were carrying out district meetings and were engaging in party strengthening programmes. The opposition parties such as the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and JVP are finalizing nominations and preparing for an upcoming election.

The Election Commission of Sri Lanka says that applications for postal voting at the 2023 Local Government (LG) elections will be accepted from eligible voters from January 05 to midnight on January 23, 2023.

Nominations for 340 local councils will be received from January 18 to 21 after which the date for the elections will be announced.
