Excise Commissioner (Legal enforcement) Kapila Kumarasinghe said that the excise department arrested an individual who was brewing illicit liquor within a farm situated in the Tungama Hinguran-aara area, Embilipitiya, yesterday.
He said that the raid was conducted by excise officers of the Embilipitiya branch following a public tip off. He said that the officers were able to detect 528,000 ml of illicit liquor and 370,000 ml of “Goda” brewed within the farm.
He explained that the officials took into custody both, the equipment used to brew liquor and the quantity of illegally brewed sprits, worth over Rs 1 million.
Mr Kumarasinghe who is also the media spokesman for the Excise Department said that the arrested individual was identified as a 34-year-old resident of Maskeliya.
He said that the suspect was produced before the Embilipitiya Magistrate Court yesterday (31) and was remanded until April 7, 2021.
