A 24-hour token strike has been declared by the All-Island Expressway Workers' Union as of this morning, seeking several trade union demands.
Tri-forces and Police Officers were sent to the expressways to provide security and ticket issuance, according to Mr. L.V.S. Weerakoon, the Director General of the Road Development Authority (RDA).
Meanwhile, Minister of Transport Bandula Gunawardena told Parliament that the RDA officials also have taken custody of the equipment preventing the use of machinery to issue tickets for those using the expressway.
He said that complaints have been lodged with the Police over the incidents.
MP Lakshman Kiriella raised the question if the government was planning to sell or lease the expressway projects.
However, Minister Gunawardena said there were no plans to lease or sell the expressway projects and that the jobs of the workers will not be affected.
