Five Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sri Lanka and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran are scheduled to be signed during the visit of Iranian President Dr. Ebrahim Raisi who is due to arrive in the country today.
The MoUs which are expected to be signed during the visit are as follows:
● Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Film Industry Between the National Film Corporation of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and The Ministry of Cultural and Islamic Guidance of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
● Memorandum of understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Media and Tourism Between the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
● Memorandum of Understanding on Iran Chamber of Cooperatives and the National Co-Operative Council of Sri Lanka.
● Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation Between the National Library & Archives of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the National Library of Sri Lanka.
● Programme of Cultural, Scientific, Technical Cooperation, Mass Media, Youth & Sports Between the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project, funded by Sri Lanka and Iran, is designed to generate and add 120 Megawatt electricity to Sri Lanka’s national grid and provide irrigation to approximately 25,000 acres of paddy lands in the south eastern part of Sri Lanka. The project is officially declared open by both Iranian and Sri Lankan Presidents today as well.
The Iranian government lent approximately USD 50 million to the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project, the total cost of which is USD 450 million, through the Export and Import Bank of Iran, as well as Euro 31 million towards Rural Electrification.
