The government has issued a gazette notification restricting the importation of gold jewelry exceeding 22 carats to Sri Lanka, State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.
He added that the move was taken by President Ranil Wickeremesinghe as a measure of preventing gold smuggling.
“It was reported that most of these smugglers were wearing gold jewelry daily when they return from foreign countries, in order to smuggle gold into the country without suspicion” he added.
He said that it was revealed that the smugglers bring 50 kilograms of gold to Sri Lanka daily. It was uncovered that the country loses about 30 million US Dollars monthly due to smuggling.
Minister elaborated that when steps were taken to prevent gold smuggling, repeated threatening calls were made to intimidate the responsible authorities.
He added that the customs detected the second largest haul of illegally imported gold was detected by customs recently.
