At least forty Indian fishermen who were taken into naval custody yesterday for engaging in bottom trawling in Lankan territorial waters have been released today as per government decision, the Navy said. Four of their trawlers were also released.
Navy spokesperson Captain Indika De Silva told Times Online that arrested Indian fishermen who were in naval custody have been released with a warning and they will be allowed to return to India today on their trawlers.
Meanwhile, another batch of 14 Indian fishermen who were arrested near Delft island in Jaffna were remanded until April 8 by the Kayts Magistrate Court. They were produced before the Court yesterday by the Fisheries Department. All of them are detained on their boats as per COVID-19 regulations.
