A stock of turmeric valued at about Rs 3 million that was being transported illegally hidden under packets of salt were taken into custody by the Anamaduwa Police this morning.
The turmeric was being transported in two lorries when they were intercepted by police following tip-off. The lorries had been on their way to Nikaweratiya and Gampola from Puttalam under the guise of transporting salt. The turmeric was hidden inside 19 sacks under stocks of salt, police added.
One lorry contained 13 sacks of turmeric while the other had nine, police said. The two lorry drivers were arrested. They are residents of Puttalam and Gampola. Anadamuwa Police are investigating.
