A fleet of 31 jeeps, four buses and 10 vans donated to the Sri Lanka Police by the Japanese Government was ceremonially handed over to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat today by Japanese Ambassador Akira Sugiyama.
The 45 vehicles, valued at Rs 775 million, are the first of a group of vehicles that are being donated by the Japanese Government through a full grant of Rs 1.25 billion, the President's Media Unit (PMD) said.
The PMD added that among the equipment the Sri Lanka Police is due to receive under the second phase of the programme are 25 more jeeps, 150 motorbikes, handheld metal detectors and other detection equipment.
Minister of Public Security, Rear Admiral (Rtd.) Sarath Weerasekara, Ministry Secretary Major General (Rtd.) Jagath Alwis, Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne, senior police officers and Japanese embassy officials were among those present on the occasion.
