Indian Coast Guard and officials attached to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence recovered 9 Kg of gold suspected to be smuggled from Sri Lanka in Thangachchimadam, Rameswaram yesterday, Indian media reported.
Six persons were taken into custody along with seized gold biscuits worth INR Rs 50 million by Indian officials.
The arrested persons are to be taken to Chennai for further investigations.
Last May, Indian authorities recovered 11.6 Kg of gold from the seabed in the Gulf of Mannar. The joint operations carried out by Indian authorities in May alone resulted in the seizure of a total of 32.689 kilos of gold bars valued at around INR 200 million INR from two fishing boats at the Gulf of Mannar when the consignment was smuggled into India from Sri Lanka.
