The Fisheries Ministry said steps have been to secure the release of twelve Sri Lankan fishermen jailed in Myanmar over two years, the Ministry said.
Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda who met the relatives of the jailed fishermen at the Ministry today assured them that moves are underway to secure the release through discussions initiated via diplomatic channels.
Earlier a Myanmar court sentenced twelve Sri Lankan fishermen to jail terms of three to five years on three charges.
Minister Devanada also took up the issue with officials attached to the Myanmar embassy in Colombo as well over the issue. He also told the families that the reason for the delay in securing release from Myanmar is due to current political situation prevailing in that country.
