A Sri Lankan who attempted to flee to Canada via Qatar using a counterfeited Canadian resident visa this morning, was arrested by the Border Surveillance Unit of the Department of Immigration and Emigration at the Bandaranaike International Airport.
The man, a 45-year-old businessman from Kandy arrived at the airport to board Qatar Airways flight QR 669, which was scheduled to depart for Qatar at 3.25 am.
When the suspect arrived at the Qatar Airways counter to obtain air tickets, the airline officials forwarded the residence visa to the Border Surveillance Unit of the Department of Immigration and Emigration at the airport for further investigation.
Border Surveillance Unit officers confirmed that the visa was counterfeited.
The suspect had said that he had paid Rs. 200,000 to a broker involved in the preparation of the visa.
The suspect was handed over to airport CID officers for further investigation after an investigation by immigration officials who confirmed that the Canadian resident visa had been counterfeited.
