Sixty-two Sri Lankan domestic workers who were illegally staying in Kuwait without visas were deported by the Sri Lankan Embassy there under temporary flight permits. They arrived at Katunayake Airport today morning (28).
Out of these, 59 were housemaids and the rest were male domestic workers.
A spokesman of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kuwait said that they were a group of Sri Lankans who had fled from the contracted places of employment and were working in various workplaces for a monthly salary of 250 Kuwait Dinars without valid visas.
These are a group of Sri Lankans who had registered at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait to voluntarily return home.
The spokesman added that more than 2,000 Sri Lankan domestic workers are currently signed up at the Sri Lanka Embassy in Kuwait to return to the country.
