Sixty six Sri Lankan workers who lost their jobs while working in a garment factory in Jordan after the Indian businessman owning the company disappeared suddenly, returned to Sri Lanka this morning.
An American buyer who imported garment items from the factory had stepped in to help the Sri Lankans while the Foreign Ministry in Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau also negotiated to get the workers back.
As a result of the disappearance of the owner, workers from Nepal, India, Bangladesh were among others affected.
The workers were left without water, electricity.
Ms Sunethra Pathmini, from Beliatta said that the workers were left without a salary for more than nine months and workers took part in a protest recently where the Police assaulted them,
Ajith Pushpakumara from Panadura who returned said that they went through a winter period and suffered during which the American buyer provided them food and water.
Five more Lankan workers are due to return to Sri Lanka today. In addition 17 other domestic workers who had taken refuge in the embassy are also due to return today.
