Twelve houses were destroyed in a fire at Logie Middleton (Periya Malliyappu) estate in Talawakelle last night, Police said. Seven of the houses were completely burnt and five others were partially damaged affecting 49 people belonging to 12 families.
The affected families have been accommodated in Talawakelle Tamil Maha Vidyalaya school building and others in houses of relatives.
Police said nobody was injured in the fire, but valuable belongings of the workers including clothing, furniture and essential documents were burnt.
The cause of the spread of the fire has not yet been ascertained and further investigations are being carried out by the Talawakelle police. Also, the Logie Estate management has taken steps to provide dry food to the affected people, the Estate management said.
