National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID 19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) Army Commander General Shavendra Silva announced today that all May Day rallies will be cancelled as a precautionary measure due to the current COVID situation in the country.
The decision was taken following a meeting of Task Force Members of NOCPCO, Medical Experts, Epidemiologists, PHIs and main stakeholders, engaged in the control of the COVID-19 epidemic held this afternoon.
The Committee evaluated developments, related to preventive measures, new trends, the emergence of global clusters, public gatherings, quarantine procedures, affected cases, forecasts, etc during a special meeting headed by Dr Asela Gunawardene, DGHS and General Shavendra Silva, head of NOCPCO.
Last year also, the government cancelled all sort of May Day events in the country following an islandwide lockdown imposed.
