The Moratuwa Municipal council has moved to evict all unathorised vendors in the town with effect from Tuesday (26).
Accordingly unauthorised structures as well as mobile units were removed, Muncipal Commissioner S.D. Thewarapperuma said.
He said the move followed complaints from the vendors who pay their taxes.
Some of the vendors had parked their mobile stalls in front of other shops completely obstructing their businesses.
The moves to remove the structures were met with resistance from the vendors with some of them sleeping under the Municipal Council vehicle.
The vendors claimed that some of the mobile units were provided by the Deputy Mayor himself and that the council has not provided any solution to their problems, such as offering an alternative place.
