Navy (SLN) seized a haul of smuggled dried turmeric about 370 kilos with a suspect, at the Kilitivu Island, Kalpitiya lagoon yesterday (Aug 17).
A special raid conducted by the SLN’s North-Western Naval Command at the Kalpitiya lagoon seized the items packed in ten sacks and a suspect while he was loading those from a dinghy to a traditional boat (Wallam), the SLN said.
Afterward, the suspect along with the haul of dried turmeric, the dinghy and the Wallam boat was taken into naval custody. According to the information, the accused held during the operation is a resident of Muhaththuwaram in Kalpitiya, aged 49.
Seized consignment and the suspect will be handed over to the Customs Preventive Office in Sinnapadu for onward legal proceedings, the SLN also said.
