About 3000 persons from 1000 families in the Northern Province have been affected by floods caused by heavy rains that have been experienced in the province over the past few days, the local Disaster Management Centre (DMC) offices stated.
The most number of persons who have been affected are in the Kilinochchi district. The district DMC office noted that all sluice gates of the Iranamadu Tank have now been opened due to heavy rains and this has resulted in a flood situation in the district. About 1600 persons from 550 families in the district have been affected by the adverse weather.
The number of persons affected in the Jaffna district is about 1200 belonging to 400 families.
The Kandawalai Divisional Secretariat, together with security forces personnel and DMC officials are currently evacuating families in low lying areas around Iranamadu tank that have been affected by floods, while supplies are also being delivered to affected persons.
