The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a 35-year-old Nigerian and two Lankans for hacking an email address and obtaining rupees 300,000 from a Sri Lankan living overseas, Police said.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said 22 fake NIC’s, 18 bank passbooks, 29 ATM cards, one laptop and 12 mobile phones were found in the house the Nigerian stayed in Nugegoda.
“There is an increasing trend of financial frauds involving Nigerian nationals. You might be a victim of these hackers,” he warned the public.
DIG Ajith Rohana said the email belonging to an architect in Moratuwa, has been hacked and approached a Sri Lankan living in France, a customer of the architect.
“In the email, the hacker has asked for a sum of 900,000 rupees for services rendered and has given a bank account number. The customer has initially deposited Rs. 300,000 before checking with the architect,” he said.
