Nominations have been called for elections to appoint members for 340 local councils.
The Election Commission said nominations for local government elections will be accepted from January 18 till January 21 noon. There will be no acceptance of nominations on Poya day (06) and Sunday (08). Candidates and parties can hand over their nomination to their respective District Secretariats/Government Agent’s offices.
Elections are to be held in 340 local councils out of the total 341 councils in the country. Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha in Galle district will be exempted from local council elections.
Once nominations are handed over, the Elections Commission will announce the dates for polls to appoint Mayors, deputy Mayors, Chairpersons, deputy Chairpersons and members to 29 Municipal Councils, 36 Urban Councils and 275 Pradeshiya Sabhas.
Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said security deposits can be made from today (04) till January 20 noon.
The Election Commission said applications for postal voting will be accepted from tomorrow(05) till January 23 at midnight. Applicants are requested to log into the commission’s website www.elections.gov.lk to find details of the 2022 electoral register. The Commission said there will be no extension for accepting applications for postal voting and requested applicants to submit applications without delay.You can share this post!
