A 30 year old man was taken into police custody over damaging the glass shield of a Buddha statue in Mawanella last week, police said.
Police Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said that the suspect was earlier arrested over criminal activities as well.
The suspect is identified as Priyantha Sampath Kumara from Kegalle.
Police have been investigating the alleged attack on a Buddha statue by analysing CCTV footage from the area in search of clues in recent days. Officers from the State Intelligence Service (SIS) are also assisting the investigation.
The glass covering protecting the chamber housing the Buddha statue next to the Dedimunda Devalaya at Hingula, had been broken, seemingly by an object thrown at the chamber. The incident is believed to have occurred late on the night of December 28 or in the early hours of December 29.
