Many Sri Lankans fed up with the country’s economic situation are leaving the country for greener pastures seeking foreign employment, Foreign Employment Bureau (EFB) sources revealed.
According to data, FEB registrations for foreign jobs continue to record an increase exceeding 241,034 this year.
Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara said that the target of the ministry is to send 330,000 youths for foreign jobs before the end of this year.
He noted that over 20,000 young men and women have already provided with foreign employment with the involvement of the FEB.
The minister said that remittance sent by expatriate workers to Sri Lanka reached US $325 million in August, an increase of 16.4 per cent compared to July.
He further added that most Sri Lankans prefer to go to Gulf countries. Others move to countries like South Korea and Japan.
"Kuwait has the highest number of people, who have gone abroad for jobs since January, and the next highest number is Qatar, then the Saudi Arabia,” the FEB said. (BS)
