Prime Minister Dinesh Gunewardena has instructed officials to immediately prepare a Cabinet paper to absorb over 30,000 youth from low-income backgrounds who were recruited to the previous government’s multi-purpose task force.
The Prime Minister’s office said about 31,000 young people are working as trainees for more than two years in government institutions without being given specific positions or work.
The PM has instructed the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration to make arrangements to offer permanent jobs in the state sector.
Applications were called in 2020 from youth who have passed grade eight but failed the Ordinary Level examinations and come from low-income households to join the government’s multi-purpose task force. Initially, it was planned to give them a six-month training and provide state-sector job opportunities.
