Measures are being taken to recruit more than 50 recently retired engine drivers to fill staff shortages due to a large number of engine drivers retiring on December 31, 2022 after reaching 60 years of age.
A dozen scheduled train journeys were canceled yesterday (2) owing to the staff shortage that arose out of the retirements.
A senior Transport Ministry official said arrangements are now being made to recruit. on contract basis, more than 50 engine drivers who had retired on December 31, 2022 after completing 60 years of age.
The recruitment of these engine drivers is expected to be completed by next week and the official expressed hope that the situation would return to normal by then.
