Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned from his post this afternoon, PM's office confirmed. He has forwarded his resignation letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The resignation of the Premier came after continuous demand from massive public protests calling for the resignation of both the Prime Minister and President to vacate office for failing the people and the country.
Earlier before the resignation, supporters of Premier Rajapaksa arrived at Temple Tress to extend solidarity with him and urged him not to resign from his post. Later, the protesters targetted peaceful anti- government protesters who camped in front of Temple Trees and assaulted them mercilessly.
Thereafter, they marched towards Galle Face where Go Gota Gama is located to attack the anti-government protesters. Over 80 persons have been hospitalized due to the attacks so far.
