An organised group of "extremists" were behind the violence seen last night during the protest at Jubilie Post, Nugegoda, the President's Media Division (PMD) claimed in a press release.
It claimed that this group, carrying weapons such as steel bars and cudgels had orchestrated the protesters to march towards President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's residence at Pengiriwatta, Mirihana.
A majority of those involved in the violence have been arrested and it has been established that most of them were organised extremists, it claimed.
The PMD release further alleged that the extremists had directed the protest claiming they wanted to create an "Arab Spring" in Sri Lanka.
Arrested suspects had revealed they had used anonymous posts on social media to instigate the public with the aim of creating anarchy in the country, the PMD also claimed.
