More than 10 Policemen at the Peliyagoda have beaten up a law student who visited the police station to hand over a food parcel to a suspect held in custody.
The victim was Migara Gunaratane, son of former Governor of Uva province Maithri Gunaratane
Mr Gunaratne had circulated pictures of his son with injuries with the following message.
“This is to inform you that my son Migara Gunaratne visited the Peliyagoda police station to visit a suspect. Inside the Police station he was brutally assaulted by 10 or more policeman. Please notify all media organisations. Today it is my son tomorrow it can be yours”.
On Tuesday the victim’s brother Charitha Gunaratne who is a lawyer had visited his client at the Peliyagoda police where there had been an argument with the police after they tried to falsely accuse his client for drug dealings.
A Chief police inspector and three others at the Peliyagoda police allegedly involved in the incident have been interdicted while SSP Sumith Gunaratne has been appointed to investigate the incident.
