Nivithigala Police are investigating the suspicious death of a 16-year-old girl whose body was found yesterday (8) on the footpath of a rubber estate with wounds to her face.
The victim's mother runs a shop near the Watapotha temple and police said the mother had phoned her daugther to come to the shop as she had not gone to school that day and was staying alone at home. Since her daughter had been late getting to the shop, the mother had gone searching for her, whereupon she had come across the body of her daughter lying on the footpath in the middle of a rubber estate that was on the way to her home.
Police Media Unit said the initial suspicion is that the girl had been struck by a branch that had been cut down inside the estate. The victim's body is currently at the Ratnapura Hospital's mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
