Conducting post mortem PCR tests will not be mandatory for all deaths, Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena said.
Issuing a circular, the Health DG said performing post mortem PCR will not be mandatory for all deaths, both at hospitals and non-hospitals with immediate effect.
"However, if a death requires a post mortem examination, post-mortem PCR can be performed at the discretion of the relevant Judicial Medical Officer (JMO),”Dr. Gunawardena said.
If a body is diagnosed with COVID-19, the method of disposal will remain the same adhering to previous circulars until further notice.
The circular has been forwarded to all Provincial Directors of health, Regional Directors of Health Services, to Directors and Medical Superintendents of all hospitals and JMOs of hospitals and universities.
