The Green Agriculture Operation Centre under the President's Office has suggested the Ministry of Agriculture to implement a comprehensive cultivation plan especially for low country vegetables.
The Centre has pointed out that although cultivation activities for up country vegetables are carried out with a proper management plan, the problem arises with low country vegetables cultivated without proper planning.
"In the cultivation of vegetables in the country, at one time the supply of vegetables in the market is high, but in a short period of time, there is a shortage of vegetables. Also, at one time the prices are high and at another time it is impossible to sell the cultivated vegetables. This condition is commonly seen in low country vegetable cultivation. But in the upland vegetable cultivation, the supply is usually without shortage throughout the year and fluctuations in prices also happen as usual," the Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera said.
The Minister has instructed the Department of Agriculture to prepare a cultivation time table to work on a cultivation plan for each vegetable crop.
