The road between Colombo Fort to Presidential Secretariat is blocked due to a protest march organized by Principals' and Teachers' Trade Union Alliance. The protest also caused traffic congestion in the Colombo Fort area with limited vehicular movements.
Earlier, General Secretary of Ceylon Teachers Union Joseph Stalin said that the teachers have decided to report to work but they will strictly engage in teaching activities alone but not in any other school-related work or extracurricular activities.
The Teachers and Principal Unions have been on trade union action for months demanding the government to resolve their salary anomalies urgently. However, despite many negotiations held between the government and unions in recent weeks, the talks ended inconclusively.
After a long gap of five months, primary classes (Grade one to five) of all government and government-approved private schools islandwide reopened today.
