Railway guards called off the strike today following the discussions held with the Railway Authorities, General Manager of Railways, W.A.S Gunasinghe said.
He explained that the Transport Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna also had taken part in the meeting which was attended by Ceylon Railway Guards union and other unions and explained that there is no need for a strike.
Earlier this morning, the railway department announced the cancellation of leave of all railway under-guards with immediate effect and ordered them to report to work before 12 noon.
According to an official attached to the office of the General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways, the strike was launched over an incident where a Railway guard was assaulted by a security guard.
Protests were held by railway commuters yesterday along with the sudden cancelation of trains during the evening. The army was also deployed to control the situation.
